Royce Manual, an expert from the Arizona Humanities Council will talk about woven art and use of the Tohono O’odham “Burden Baskets” and basket making traditions throughout the southwest. Royce Manuel (Akmierl Aw-Thum), is a Pima Indian who single-handedly saved the ability to weave the kiaha, or traditional Pima burden basket, from extinction. Manuel, a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community east of Scottsdale, received the 10th Annual Spirit of the Heard Award, for his work in educating…
