Wackerle, who has been featured in national art publications, specializes in plein air and studio painting, conducting a large amount of his work outside.
His process consists of scouting out a good location-at times hiking at great length-selecting dramatic light conditions, editing the subject matter for composition, and selecting a color palette that achieves a striking impression.
The artist also paints alla prima, a technique that centers on painting quickly. This method allows him to capture fleeting scenes quickly. Smaller works are brought into his studio for glazing and correct for light and shadow. Larger works, especially cloud abstracts and sunsets, are done in the studio either directly from life observation or memory.
