November 18, 2013 @ 11:30 pm - November 19, 2013 @ 1:30 pm

Starry Skies at Tumacácori

The skies of southern Arizona are famous for clear dark nights, perfectly suited to the study of the heavens. This Saturday, November 23, Tumacácori National Historical Park will host a special evening for star gazing. The park will be open as usual from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., then will reopen from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for visitors to enjoy the beautiful, dark skies of a moonless night on the grounds of the historic Tumacácori Mission church.

Weather permitting, volunteers and sky maps will be available on the mission grounds to help participants locate constellations. Visitors are encouraged to bring flashlights, binoculars and spotting scopes. John Dwyer, president of the Green Valley Club of the Sonoran Astronomical Society, will be on the mission grounds with an eight inch Celestion telescope, specially equipped with a video camera to project celestial bodies on a large monitor for easy viewing.

Admission to the park is $3.00 per adult, free for federal pass holders and children under age 16.  For more information, call 520-377-5060.
