Crossing A Line
March 27, 2015 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pmFree
Should art make you think?
Should it make you cry?
Or should it purely please the eye?
Tubac Art and Gifts Gallery, in Tubac, Arizona, is unveiling a special exhibit called “Crossing
A Line.” On the evening of March 27 between 5:30 and 7:30, you can meet the three featured
artists, Alvaro Enciso, Carol St. John and Carol Swiggett.
Alvaro Enciso moved to Tucson in 2011 to give his art a new direction. He began volunteering
with the Tucson Samaritans and as he hiked the trails to put out water in the desert, the
rusted cans that the migrants left behind grabbed his attention. He decided to transform those
insignificant objects into conceptual pieces that help tell the stories of the broken dreams,
suffering, and disappointment that occur in the Sonoran desert on a daily basis.
Carol St. John is a writer, teacher, and artist who is active in studying and responding to border
issues. Standing in front of her work, seeing its poignant message, you can almost hear the
emotion of her subjects.
Carol Swiggett offers an equally intense depiction of life on the border. She calls attention to
the desert’s harsh reality through a powerful use of color which she masterfully tones down to
intrigue the viewer.
Don’t miss this special opportunity to meet the artists, discuss their work, and witness their
vision at the Tubac Art and Gifts Gallery — Arielle House, 31 Tubac Road (two-story pink
building at the east end of Tubac road).
